Juwel Aquarium Filters and Filter Media
The cleaning intervals of Juwel Filters mean that the pump can be used for optimal circulation. Filtering is more effective when the pump circulates slowly. The filtering bacteria require sufficient contact time with the water requiring to be cleaned.
Increased recirculation produces less effective filtering! Also, an increase in water movement expels the most important plant nutrients.
For good plant growth, please do not use additional aeration.
To sum up: the more slowly the water flows through the Juwel Sponge filter, the more effective the cleaning is. Optimal recirculation only occurs as a result of large cleaning intervals.
Vigorous water movement and aeration damage plant growth.
The task of the filter is to reduce the load from fish and food. This load on the water is reduced by bacteria which settle on the filter (biological filtering). This means there has to be a setup stage for the aquarium, as a sufficient number of the bacteria has to form first. To achieve rapid multiplication of the bacteria, Use bacterial additive such as Cycle from Hagen
In the Juwel filter system, large particles are picked up by the filter wadding, to prevent the area below from blocking up quickly. If the filter wadding is changed regularly, there is an increase in the cleaning intervals for the remaining filter media.
To sum up: the filter's main task does not consist in picking up dirt particles but the filter guarantees stable, healthy water conditions, with its biological filtering.
The large amount of porous areas in the blue sponge filters give the bacteria a large surface on which to settle. The coarse filter sponge should only be cleaned once every three months and the Juwel sponge filters below only once a year. Avoid cleaning all the Juwel blue sponges at the same time, as this reduces the number of filtering bacteria and biological filtering can be interrupted when they are cleaned completely.
Hint: half fill a bucket with aquarium water and squeeze out the sponges in it several times. This is the gentlest way of cleaning, where the filtering bacteria are concerned.

Juwel Poly Pad Filter
The Juwel poly pads clean the water of large dirt particles ensuring that these do not get into the filter sponges clogging them and preventing the bio - cultures to work. Change the Poly pad in your filter system once a week! Please observe the maintenance guidelines in your instruction manual for further details
Measurements: 9.9 x 9.9 x 0.1 cm
The active carbon sponge from Juwel cleans the water of all chemical impurities by absorbing them in its active carbon. Consequently, these chemcial impurities will not effect the bacteria - cultures inside the blue sponges. If the carbon sponge is left in the filter too long, it can release the chemicals again into the water. Consequently, we recommend to replace the Juwel carbon sponge every 4 weeks.
Measurements: 9.5 x 9.5 x 2.5 cm
Juwel Cyrax Filter Media
The highly porous filter material utilizes its extremely large surface for effective biological cleaning and ensures the highest water quality.
The nitrate removal sponge assists in enhancing the water quality in your aquarium. Replace it every 6 weeks and see the difference in plants and your fish!!!
Juwel Filter Sponge Coarse
JUWEL Filtermedia! Made to fit each Filter System! Use the filter baskets for your filter system to make maintenance even easier! The coarse and the fine blue filter sponges house the most important bio - cultures, which are responsible to effectively clean the water. You should clean or replace one sponge at a time every 3 - 6 months to maintain the right biological balance in your aquarium.
Juwel Filter Sponge Fine
JUWEL Filtermedia! Made to fit each Filter System! Use the filter baskets for your filter system to make maintenance even easier! The coarse and the fine blue filter sponges house the most important bio - cultures, which are responsible to effectively clean the water. You should clean or replace one sponge at a time every 3 - 6 months to maintain the right biological balance in your aquarium.
Juwel Filter Service Set
JUWEL Filtermedia! Made to fit each Filter System! Use the filter baskets for your filter system to make maintenance even easier! The poly pads clean the water of large dirt particles ensuring that these do not get into the filter sponges clogging them and preventing the bio - cultures to work. Change the Poly pad in your filter system once a week! The carbon sponge cleans the water from chemical impurities by absorbing them in the carbon. Thus, the bio - cultures in the sponges will not be effected by chemcial impurities. Replace the carbon sponge every 4 weeks. With this in mind we have designed the Media Service Pack for the Rekord 60, Rekord 600 and Rekord 800. One pack will last you 1 month!
Fluval 3 Stage Internal Filters
Fluval underwater filters with three stage filtration are ideal for use in fresh, marine or reptile environments.
Stage 1 foam removes large particles.
Stage 2 poly/carbon cartridge traps fine debris, improves water clarity and removes impurities.
Stage 3 Biomax provides optimal biological filtration efficiency
Fluval U Series Cartridge Replacement
Replace 1 Poly/Carbon cartridge every 2 weeks.
Replace Alternate Foam Pads every 3-6 months.
Replace ½ quantity of BIOMAX nodes every 5-6 months
How To Replace Fluval U Series Cartridges
Do not replace all filtration cartridges at the same time. Alternate filter cartridge changes so that some older cartridges remain in use. This ensures the re-seeding of beneficial bacteria, so that colonies discarded with older cartridges will be replaced by vigorous new ones. To enhance bacterial action, pour a dose of Nutrafin Cycle Biological Aquarium Supplement onto your filter cartridges each time you change the media.
